Push-up Power

The fastest route to more push-ups is often doing more good repetitions while doing fewer exhausting sets.

A hard set to failure may feel productive, but it reduces the quality of everything that follows. Submaximal volume lets you practise the movement more often and accumulate far more clean work.

Technique 1: easy sets through the day

Choose roughly half your current maximum. If your best is 50, begin with sets of 20–25. Perform one set every hour for part of the day. Add repetitions only while the last set still looks like the first.

Technique 2: ladders

Do one repetition, rest briefly, then two, three and onward. Stop two or three repetitions before failure, rest one to three minutes and begin again at one. Add the repetitions from every ladder to track total volume.

Test, do not prove

Use one all-out set every two to four weeks. The rest of the programme is practice. Perfect form and repeatable speed matter more than the burn.

Central rule: never miss a repetition in training. Leave enough strength to practise again.
